UWA Central Firewall

Introduction

Welcome to the Central UWA Firewall web page. Please read all the information on this page before contacting ITS.  On this page you will find two electronic forms, one for adding subnets to the central UWA firewall and the second for adding administrators to the central UWA firewall. You will also find an Administrators Guide, designed to help you get started with using and managing your firewall.

General Information

Please ensure that you have familiarised yourself with the “UWA Juniper Firewall Administrator Quick Start Guide” below. This guide has been compiled by ITS to give you enough information to get started with the firewall management interface “Network and Security Manager” and also guide you trough the most common tasks.

If you have any feedback regarding the Quick Start Guide, please contact ITS and we will be happy to assess your requirements as this is a working document designed to help school and faculty staff. Additional information can and will be added to this document if required.

Once these forms have been completed, they should be returned to Information Technology Services. If the forms are faxed, the original signed form must also be sent or delivered to ITS. Any queries on general access to the computer systems should be directed to ITS Client Services.

Once your form is received by ITS Security staff, you will be contacted to be notified of the progress. Please allow up to 72 hours for the forms to be processed.

UWA Firewall Mailing List

ITS Security staff will add all firewall administrators to the UWA Firewall mailing list. This will be done as part of creating the administrators accounts for NSM.

This list will be used to circulate announcements about the central firewall, such as any scheduled downtime due to maintenance. ITS Security staff will monitor this mailing list for any support-related questions.

For more information about UWA mailing lists please refer to the mail lists web page: http://maillists.uwa.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/firewall

NSM Client Download

You can download the NSM client from the following ftp site: ftp://ftp.uwa.edu.au/pub/Juniper/

Conditions Of Access

Please read the following before you proceed.

  • Please ensure that you complete all fields in both forms.
  • ITS will use the information provided to contact the appropriate firewall administrators whenever necessary.
  • Please make ITS aware of any changes to contact information where possible.
  • ITS Security staff may contact firewall administrators to check that all information is still valid. If the Primary or Secondary firewall administrators are not contactable the matter may be escalated to the Head of Department who authorised the requests. This escalation would only be carried out in situations where activities on your network are impacting the rest of the UWA network and firewall users.
  • If necessary ITS may take action on your behalf to mitigate any campus wide impact to the computer network.
  • Please ensure that you have read Section 6 of the “UWA Juniper Firewall Administrator Quick Start Guide” and familiarised yourself with the Best Practice and minimum standards for UWA Central Firewall use. It is important that you adhere to the minimum standards when configuring your firewall rules. ITS can assist firewall administrators in this regard.
  • ITS may carry out regular check on firewall configuration and conduct vulnerability assessments in order to comply with internal and state audit requirements. In cases where issues are identified ITS will contact the responsible firewall administrator(s) to have the issue(s) rectified.

Each school or faculty must have at least one responsible administrator for their virtual firewall and at least two contacts, the primary administrator and the Head of Department.
