Student User Regulations

  1. A student username will expire two weeks after an enrolment check indicates you are no longer an enrolled student. An email message warning of impending expiry is sent.

  2. A student username is for the sole use of the applicant and may not be shared, not even with family. This means you are not allowed to give your password to anyone or allow anyone else to use your username.

  3. Fees and quotas. While there is no charge for a basic student service, this includes only a minimal amount of network traffic and a small amount of disk space for storage of files. Students are liable for the cost of any additional traffic and should be aware that some services can be very expensive. Usernames have full service access suspended, reverting to only web mail access, as soon as excessive expenditure has been detected and full service will only be re-enabled on full payment of amounts owing. Additional quotas are available for storage on payment of a fee. Primary mailbox files must be kept small, or they will be moved.

  4. Students are not to alter their Real Name field in the password file or on sent mail.

  5. Only ITS-authorised software may be used on ITS student servers and these servers may not be used to download or store software that might reasonably be assumed to be for purposes contrary to the ITS student usage rules. User areas will at times be checked for unauthorised or non-permitted software and action taken (including removal of software and/or termination of access) without notice.

  6. The student service may not be used to access, view or download pornography or other unauthorised material.

  7. Specific "DON'Ts" (does not imply permission for activities not specifically listed)
    • DON'T post newsitems or send mail about money-making or pyramid-selling schemes. These are illegal.
    • DON'T send any chain letters or forward any that are received (other than to ITS support).
    • DON'T use the student server for any money-making activity, not even as a business contact address.
    • DON'T create large mail lists and send to all, nor send harassing mail or messages to anyone.
    • DON'T behave irresponsibly or maliciously - eg crashing the machine, or writing to other users' screens.
  8. It is the Student's responsibility to check their account regularly (weekly during semester) for mail and new UCSnews items. These are the only means we have of contacting you. As there are thousands of students, mail is not practical for general information, so UCSnews is important.

The current UCSnews, and an archive of older items, is available here.
  9. Usernames which are inactive for a period of 6 months without prior arrangement will be emailed a notice of intention to delete, and removed from the system if there is no response within four weeks of such notice.

  10. ITS reserves the right to vary or add to these rules as deemed necessary. Changes will be notified via UCSnews, not to individuals, and online copies of rules in the Web Pages will be updated.

******* Student Server service is for authorised clients only *******

WARNING:Misuse of computer access can attract criminal penalties, civil liability for third party loss and university disciplinary action.
