Web Site Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Someone wants to pull my content

You may be familiar with the MySource template called Pull Content which allows you to pull the content from any web page from the University web site and display it within the navigational and branding context of your own site.

Someone has decided that they would like to pull some content from your site and has made contact with you, a Site Administrator, in order to arrange access to the required pages.

What do you have to do next?

Front-end Editor access will allow users to pull the content from a specific page on your site.

The advantage of allocating this level of access is that whenever you need to delete or archive a page, you can click on the Security tab and see if there are any Front-end Editors listed, if there are they are probably pulling the content of the page and will need to be informed of the page's change of status or deletion.

This type of access level DOES NOT allow people to edit the live information on your site.

Allocating Front-end Editor Access

Go to the page that needs to be pulled in MySource and click on the Security tab.

Click on the Security tab

Scroll down to the field labelled New Front-end Editor and enter the person who wishes to pull the content's MySource user name. You will need to have asked them this in advance. Press the Commit button or, if you are using IE on a PC, use the "Alt S" shortcut.

Adding a new Front End Editor

Important!

You must not attempt to pull a page that has been secured with the Secure Groups Login template as this will break the security and allow the page to display.

What if I want to delete or re-write my page?

It would be a good idea to see if anyone is pulling the page's content.

There may be more people pulling your page than just the Front End Editors listed under the page's Security tab. You might have employed designers to develop your site and they might be pulling information in to other sites to which they have access. Or a Front End Editor might leave, but the page is still being pulled.

This is where the Page Dependents tab comes in.

If you decide to delete the page or change the page's contents it is a good idea to check to see who might be pulling the page and to inform them that you are either deleting it or changing the content which may no longer be relevant for them. In order to perform this check you can use the Page Dependents tab.

Clicking on the page name link will take you to the page pulling your page's content. You can then click on the Page Information link on the bottom right for a list of Site Administrators or Editors.
