Web Site Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Securing an attachment

There are 3 ways you can restrict access to an page and its associated attachment(s). The first is to use the secure page template.

This is probably the easiest way to secure a page, the attachments are slightly less secure, they won't be picked up by any search engines but if someone guesses the full path to an attachment, or if someone links directly to an attachment, the security is bypassed. This is ideal for documents of low to medium sensitivity.

Options exist to secure the page by IP range, Student number and password and to a range of Radius authenticated accounts, like Cyllene or @biz.

Another way to secure an attachment is to host it on our intranet installation of MySource. Our intranet installation, (like the secure page when using the UWA IP range option) limits the page and associated attachment(s) only to users within the UWA network. The page and attachment(s) will be accessible to anyone using a computer on the UWA network like a public internet terminal in the Library so are only really ideal for attachments of low to medium sensitivity.

The third way, using the Secure Groups Login template, allows you to host the page and associated attachment(s) on your regular site but unlike the secure page template secures the attachment as well as the page it is attached to. The drawback is that that users have to always visit a login page prior to accessing the document. In the case of using the UWA IP range the login page access is seamless, but nevertheless the page must first be visited to check the user's IP.

Contact the ITS Service Desk for details about the Secure Groups Login template.
