Open Source

Please note that these pages are currently under review and that some of the information may not necessarily be up to date.

This site provides information about the use and development of Open Source Software at UWA. Why is Open Source Software important, especially at a University? Well apart from the fact that the software is often as good as or better than expensive commercial software, there are important reasons to use and promote Open Source Software. Open Source promotes the exchange and free flow of information and knowledge. It also promotes the constant improvement of software through the voluntary participation of the developer community.

The aim of the site is to explore the use of OSS for both students and staff at UWA and to encourage staff to release all software developed at the University as Open Source Software.

Note that this is actually official University Policy - see Open Software

An excellent site aimed at the University sector which provides resources and other information about OSS is the ASK-OSS site funded by DEST and located at Macquarie University - see http://www.ask-oss.mq.edu.au/

Another very helpful and relevant site is the OSS-Watch site in the UK, see http://www.oss-watch.ac.uk/
